ANOTHER MASSIVE PILE-UP AT JHR; OLSON IN YET ANOTHER DESTRUCTIVE ACCIDENT

Hollywood, CA - Today was Round One of the Jim Hall Racing Spring 2002 Race Series.  Over the years, the JHR Championship has produced Indy and NASCAR greats, and even the aspiring Formula One competitor, Patrick Long (www.PatrickLong.com), the Southern California native who is currently competing in England and Europe.  The press considers Long the best hope for an American in Formula One in over thirty years.

The Round One competition was fierce, and spectators were witness to some very exciting races in both the sprint and shifter karts.  In one of the first races, Peter Olson virtually damaged a kart beyond drivability.  Olson spun out in turn one at over 60mph when an opponent was attempting to pass on the inside of the turn, and Olson wound up in the center of a massive pile-up.  Olson tried to continue but his efforts were cut short when he realized that the entire front section of his kart, as well as the brakes, were severely damaged.

It is clear that Olson repeated his first-round aggressiveness of last season, which resulted in his hospitalization after the event last fall.  After the race Olson said, “Of course I regret the accident, whether it was my fault or not.  I say that because the simple fact is that it is better to finish 3rd or 5th or whatever, than to not finish at all.  But I admit that sometimes maybe I have been guilty of misjudging a pass, because sometimes we are all just so aggressive, so caught up in the moment that we are unwilling to give up even a single position, although there is so much of the race left and so much of a chance to take it that position back.  But that is racing.  In the end, I think any driver’s worst critic is himself – you can’t walk off the track with your vehicle destroyed and watch the others drive on without feeling a deep sense of regret.  In racing, you must make decisions at a very fast pace – you don’t have time to dwell on things.  And the only way to learn to make the correct decisions in the heat of the moment is with experience.  And that experience takes time, that’s all.”

Olson finished the day with a 5th (DNF- Did Not Finish), 2nd, and 3rd.  For more information on Peter Olson, visit his website at:  www.peteolson.com.  And to follow the Jim Hall Kart Racing Series, log on to: www.jhrkartracing.com.
