Ventura, California – As JHR rookie Peter Olson learned the hard way today, you can’t win them all.

In the only day of the JHR Fall 2001 Race Series run on the difficult “B-track” configuration, which includes additional turns from an inner section of the normal A-track, drivers were pushing the limit all afternoon.  The B-track section includes an additional 70mph straightaway, at the end of which the drivers have to brake at the limits of traction in order to set up for a challenging low-speed 180-degree hairpin turn.

Olson qualified third for the day’s races, but in the first race was passed on the very first lap going into turn one.  Olson went on to retake his position, as well as pass the 2nd place driver who had spun out on the hairpin turn inside the B-track section.  But during one of the final laps, Olson made an overly aggressive pass and slid wide, scrubbing off speed when he drove his kart over a section of the kerbing, which gave the 3rd place driver the opportunity to make a pass.

But little did Olson know his race day would only get worse.

At the start of the second race, Olson was passed on the inside of turn one, and didn’t “close the door” on the karts following the inside line directly behind the driver who passed him.  As a result, Olson was “trained” as several karts managed to get by.

In the final race of the day, Olson was again passed in the inside going into turn one.  By the end of the day, Olson had finished 4th, 3rd, and 4th.  Quite a disappointing day for the racer who had managed to achieve victories in both of his first two JHR race days.

“I think today has taught me a few lessons that can only be learned the hard way”, said Olson after the races.  “I need to work on turn one, driving more inside [passing] lines in practice – I need to practice the way that I will race.  Also, I need to learn when there is a real passing opportunity instead of trying to force one, which only gets me way off-line and can really slow me down.  But I know exactly what I need to do, what I need to work on, and I feel confident about the remainder of the series.”
